As part of the recent partnership between India and Australia acknowledged as the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) on 23 May 2023, the MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme) program has been introduced.

The MATES visa is a pilot program designed mainly for young Indian professionals and graduates. With a aim of offering 3,000 temporary visas to young and skilled professionals each year, MATES allows successful applicants to live and study in Australia for a 2-year period. Eligibility benchmarks must be met by Indian graduates and professionals to qualify for this visa.

MATES participants will enjoy the privilege of residing and working in Australia for up to 2 years. While there's no strict requirement for visa holders to work in their specific field of study, the program is intended to facilitate the growth of young professionals and the expansion of their skills and networks, especially within the specified sectors.

How many spots are available under MATES?

MATES will launch as a pilot program with an allocation of 3,000 positions for primary applicants per program year.

Can MATES participants bring their family to Australia?

Participants will have the option to request visas for their dependents, including spouses and dependent children. Dependents will have the right to work in Australia and will not count towards the annual cap.

What is the duration of stay for visa holders in Australia?

Visa holders will have 12 months to make their initial entry into Australia and can then stay for 24 months from the date of their first entry. The visa allows for multiple entries into Australia.

Can MATES visa holders extend their stay?

Participants have the opportunity to extend their stay in Australia by applying for another visa that grants temporary or permanent residence, provided they meet all the eligibility criteria for that visa. MATES participants are limited to participating in the Scheme only once.

What is the cost of MATES visa?

Additional information regarding the visa subclass and associated application fees will be made available soon. There may be an extra fee for including subsequent dependent family members in the MATES application. Applicants will be responsible for covering other expenses related to their application, including English language testing fees.

When will MATES begin?

An Implementation Protocol is presently in development. It will outline the operational aspects of MATES, ensure diversity, fairness, and equitable access, and maintain the integrity of the Scheme. There is no specified timeline for the implementation of MATES at this time.
