Alberta Introduces New EOI System for AAIP Worker Streams

Alberta has recently revamped its immigration process for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) worker streams. Starting September 30, 2024, potential immigrants must submit a Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) online. This new system, similar to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), evaluates candidates based on factors like education, language skills, work experience, age, and family ties within Alberta.

Candidates with higher scores in the EOI are more likely to be selected for provincial nomination and receive an invitation to apply. It's crucial to note that individuals with existing or pending AAIP applications must withdraw them before submitting a Worker EOI. Alberta plans to begin conducting draws for the worker streams in mid to late October.

Recent Changes to Worker Stream Applications

Earlier this year, Alberta implemented changes to its Worker stream application process to address the high demand and align with labor market priorities. In June, the province introduced a targeted application pool, limiting the number of applications accepted each month. This approach aimed to balance processing times and ensure efficient allocation of the 9,750 provincial nominations allotted to Alberta for 2024. The affected programs include:

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream,
  • Rural Renewal Stream,
  • Accelerated Tech Pathway, and
  • Tourism and Hospitality Stream

This system was designed to provide applicants with multiple opportunities to apply throughout the year. Due to the overwhelming demand for the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the province temporarily paused accepting applications between February and June. This pause allowed the AAIP to focus on processing existing applications and prioritizing labor shortages in sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism, and hospitality.

Overall, these changes reflect Alberta's commitment to attracting skilled workers who can contribute to the province's economic growth and address specific labor market needs.

Alberta's Express Entry Stream

Alberta's Express Entry Stream remains one of the most sought-after pathways within the AAIP. Candidates who meet the federal Express Entry and AAIP- express entry stream criteria for a particular draw can be eligible for provincial nomination, significantly increasing their chances of securing permanent residency. This stream is particularly attractive to skilled workers with strong language abilities and relevant work experience, as it demands a relatively low Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score and offers faster route to Canadian immigration.
