Australia has announced changes to Student visa eligibility for Onshore applicants

The Australian government is tightening its student visa system to ensure it attracts genuine students who can contribute to the country's economic growth. Now, to achieve this, DHA is implementing stricter eligibility requirements. Effective July 1st, 2024, holders of certain temporary visas, including Temporary Graduate, Visitor, and Maritime Crew visas, will no longer be able to apply for a student visa while already in Australia.

List of visas ineligible for onshore student visa applications

This expands the existing list of visas ineligible for onshore student visa applications. Find below the complete list of visa holders that will be unable to apply for a Student visa onshore:

  • Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate)
  • Subclass 600 (Visitor)
  • Subclass 601 (Electronic Travel Authority)
  • Subclass 602 (Medical Treatment)
  • Subclass 651 (eVisitor)
  • Subclass 771 (Transit)
  • Subclass 988 (Maritime Crew)
  • Subclass 995 (Diplomatic Temporary) – primary visa holders only
  • Subclass 403 (Temporary Work) International Relations)) – Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream
  • Subclass 426 (Domestic Worker (Temporary) – Diplomatic or Consular)

This change aims to prevent "visa hopping," where people use temporary visas as a stepping stone to stay in Australia long-term by applying for a student visa onshore. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will now focus on granting student visas to those with a genuine intention to study and contribute their qualifications to Australia's future.

Streamlines Student Visa Process to Attract Long-Term Learners

The Australian government is making changes to its student visa program to ensure it attracts students who plan to dedicate themselves to their studies and contribute their skills to the country's future. This includes addressing the practice of "visa hopping," which has resulted in a number of former international students remaining in Australia on temporary visas.

These updates will encourage current Temporary Graduate visa holders to either pursue skilled work opportunities or explore alternative visa pathways, including those leading to permanent residency. Visitor visa applicants seeking to study in Australia will need to apply for a student visa before arriving. This streamlined process will make it easier for genuine students with a clear academic focus to obtain visas and pursue their educational goals in Australia.
