The Australian Government is increasing the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) from $53,900 to $70,000 from 1 July 2023. Unchanged since year 2013, approximately 90 percent of all full-time jobs in Australia are now paid higher than the present TSMIT, undermining skilled migration system of the land down under.
Rise of Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold
As per the government, the new income threshold of $70,000 is approximately where the TSMIT should have been if it had been appropriately indexed over the last 10 years. Speaking about this measure The Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security, Clare O’Neil stated,
“This is the first increase to the TSMIT in a decade. It is a down payment on the type of migration system the Albanese Government wants to build.
Our migration success story is rooted in permanency and citizenship. Giving people the chance to get established in their community, educate their kids, and become Australian.
We are leaving behind the unplanned, unstrategic, temporary migration program we are currently encumbered with thanks to the previous government.”
Pathway to Permanent Residency to TSS holders
The government has also announced that by the end of 2023, Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) short stream visa holders will also get a pathway to PR (permanent residency) within present capped permanent program. It will help employers and migrants get more confidence, and will help raise the skill level in our permanent skilled program. Both these measures shall fulfil government’s commitments to raise the TSMIT and expand pathways to permanent residence.
