The Government of Australia has increased the financial capacity requirement for international students applying for student visas. With effect from October 1, 2023, student visa applicants will be required to show a minimum savings balance of AU$24,505, ensuring coverage of their annual living expenses. This revision is the first since 2019 and is prompted by the increased cost of living.
What is the financial capacity requirement?
Acquiring an Australian student visa requires meeting several criteria. One such requirement is the need to provide proof of sufficient funds to cover travel expenses, course fees, and living expenses throughout the duration of your studies. This condition is in place to minimize financial difficulties during your educational journey.
Update in Financial capacity
Considerably, there have been no change/increase to the financial capacity requirement since 2019, mainly due to the troubles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Before 2019, this financial capacity requirement was subject to annual updates. The new requirement is scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2023.
For those planning to bring a spouse or family members, updated financial thresholds also apply. In case you submit a new application on or after October 1, 2023, you will be required to provide proof of these revised amounts. However, if your application is submitted before this date, the new financial capacity prerequisites will not be applicable.
It's crucial to note that the specified amounts for meeting the financial capacity represent the minimum essential for the visa application. Actual living costs can vary across various regions in Australia and even may exceed the minimum threshold required for the visa.
If you are preparing for your studies in the Land Down Under, it is advisable to estimate your day-to-day living expenses here. You can use the Study Australia Cost of Living Calculator to make an estimate of these expenses.
