Canada announces PR pathway for Caregivers with a reduced Work Experience requirement

In last few decades, caregivers from overseas have played an instrumental role in supporting families in Canada. Now, recognizing their massive efforts and sacrifices, Canadian government has announced to offer pathways to PR (Permanent Residence) to the caregivers with reduced work experience requirement. Find out more about this latest update for the Caregivers in Canada.

PR pathway for Caregivers

On February 10, 2023, the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that the total work experience in Canada required by a caregiver to be eligible for Canadian PR (Permanent residency) is being reduced from 24 months to 12 months.

Moreover, IRCC has reserved some spaces under the existing caregiver pathways for the caregivers who already have work experience in Canada from a previous work permit. This will allow them to apply for permanent residence. These measures will take effect from April 30, 2023, and will be retrospective for those caregivers who have already applied. In his stamen about this measure, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said,

“Caregivers are an important option for families in Canada and have played an instrumental role in the lives of many growing children, aging parents, and those who need additional specialized care. By reducing the work experience required in Canada to one year, more caregivers and their families will become eligible to transition to permanent residence sooner, meaning that they can settle down and start the next chapter of their lives here in Canada.”

Positive outcomes of new measure for the caregivers

This new measure will have following positive outcomes for the caregivers in Canada:

  • Caregivers and their families will get advantage of faster path to PR and successful settlement in Canada.
  • By decreasing the amount of work-experience required in Canada, IRCC also aims to improve processing of applications.
  • This measure is expected to support around 90 percent of applications presently in processing, a benefit for both the caregivers who are just beginning and those who have been providing care in Canada already.

As per IRCC,  end date of the existing caregiver programs coming closure, it will continue to make any essential changes to exhibit its gratitude to the caregivers who help lessen some of the stress in the lives of families in need in the maple leaf country. Moreover, work is in progress on the future of caregiver programming to strategies for what comes next after the pilots complete in June 2024.
