Canada Continues to Outshine Global Peers in Work-Life Balance- Ranks Among Top 10

A recent study conducted by the global HR firm Remote has solidified Canada's reputation as a leader in work-life balance. The research, which evaluated various factors such as statutory leave, sick pay, work hours, and overall happiness, ranked Canada fifth among the top ten countries globally. New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium, and Denmark claimed the top four spots. Here is the list of Top ten countries:

  1. New Zealand,
  2. Ireland,
  3. Belgium,
  4. Denmark
  5. Canada
  6. Germany
  7. Finland
  8. Australia
  9. Norway
  10. Spain

Canada's strong performance can be attributed to several factors. The country boasts a relatively short workweek, averaging 32 hours for most Canadians. Its commitment to safety and inclusivity for the 2SLGBTQ+ community also contributed to its high score. Other nations rounding out the top ten included Germany, Finland, Australia, Norway, and Spain.

A Stark Contrast with the U.S.

In stark contrast, the United States, Canada's neighbour to the south, ranked a dismal 55th out of 60 countries. The U.S. was penalized for its lack of annual paid vacation or sick leave, non-universal healthcare, and longer work hours.

Canada's Work-Life Balance: A Deeper Dive

While Canada excels in many areas, the report highlighted a potential area for improvement: annual statutory leave. While Canadians receive 17 days of statutory leave, this can vary significantly depending on the province. For instance, in Ontario, the most populous province, private sector workers may have to wait five years for three weeks of vacation time.

In comparison, countries like New Zealand and Ireland offer all employees four weeks of paid annual vacation after just 12 months of employment.

Canada's Global Appeal

Beyond work-life balance, Canada consistently ranks high in other global surveys. It was recently voted the world's safest country for travellers and the top "dream work destination." The country's strong passport and welcoming immigration policies further enhance its appeal. In 2023, Canada admitted over 470,000 new permanent residents and has ambitious immigration targets for the future, i.e. over a million in next three years.
