Canada- Expiring PGWP Holders can now apply for new open work permit for up to 18 months

As per the latest update by IRCC, if your post graduation work permit (PGWP) has expired or will expire between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2023, from 7 April 2023, you can be eligible to get a one-time new open work permit that will allow you to work in Canada for up to 18 months. This is a great news for some current and former post-graduation work permit holders.

The window to apply shall remain open until December 31, 2023. The IRCC has recently sent emails to eligible candidates for the simplified process to extend their work permit. The eligible applicants will be able to:

• Choose a simplified process to extend their work permit, or
• Apply to extend their work permit, or
• Get a new work permit to restore their status

Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The PGWP or Post-Graduation Work Permit is a document issued by the government of Canada that allows international students who have graduated from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) in Canada to work in Canada for a period of time after finishing their studies.

The validity of the PGWP depends on the length of the student's program of study in the maple leaf country, which can range from 8 months to 3 years. The purpose of the PGWP is to provide foreign students in Canada, with Canadian work experience, which can be helpful in their application for permanent residency (PR) in Canada.
