Encouraging Francophone immigration to Canada has always been the priority of the Canadian government.
The Maple Leaf Country has taken several measures in the past to welcome as many French-speaking nationals as possible, and enforce the contribution of newcomers to minority communities and hence, maintain the social structure of the nation. The latest announcement from the government reaffirms its commitment to support French as an official language and Francophone communities and people at large.
Expansion of the Francophone Mobility Program
On 15 June 2023, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced the expansion of the Francophone Mobility Program, for a period of 2 years. This measure will allow Canadian employers to make a job offer to suitable candidates with a reasonable command of French for all NOC occupations with the exception of jobs in main agriculture.
Speaking about this measure Minister Fraser said, “Our government is committed to increasing the presence of French-speaking immigrants from coast to coast to coast. The changes to the Francophone Mobility Program open the possibility for this and provide support for the development of the Francophone minority communities that welcome them. By attracting more French-speaking individuals we embrace a wealth of linguistic talents and cultural perspectives and a shared heritage that enriches the cultural tapestry of our great nation.”
This measure, in the beginning, was reserved for highly skilled French-speaking temporary foreign workers, however, now it is open to more French-speaking immigrants and helping them gain Canadian work experience and possibly qualify for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR). Here are a few key points to note:
Benefits of learning French for Canada PR Aspirants
The Canadian government has recently announced to conduct Category-based draws and French Language proficiency will be a key selection factor in forthcoming Express Entry draws this year. The EE system also allocate additional immigration points to the candidates with French language proficiency.
The federal and provincial governments give preference to French-speaking candidates in various federal and provincial immigration programs. Hence, if you have reasonable command on the French language, you stand a good chance of getting ITA (Invitation to Apply) for Canadian PR visa in Express Entry System or any of the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
