Canada has lifted 20 Hours Work limit for Internationals students from 15 November 2022

With effect from 15 November 2022, Canadian government has temporarily lifted the off campus work limit of 20 hours per week for International students in Canada. This temporary change is in effect until December 31, 2023.

Hence, the international students who are enrolled for study in Canada in 2022-23 session can temporarily work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year. Find out more.

International students can temporarily work without 20 hours limit

Last month, Canadian immigration minister Sean Fraser made this announcement that foreign students in Canada would now be allowed to work more than 20 hours a week between the period mentioned above.

  • This is a one-time change has been announced to help with Canada’s labour shortage, predominantly in positions conventionally held by students, i.e. food services, retail, and hospitality. However, there are no restrictions on the type of employment.
  • The new change means that the 500,000 international students already in Canada can now work more hours.

  • This latest change will provide several foreign students with a greater prospect to gain valuable work experience in Canada, and will surge the availability of workers to withstand Canada’s post-pandemic growth.
  • With more than half million international students already in maple leaf country to potentially work extra hours, this provisional change reflects the key role international students can play in addressing Canada’s labour shortage, while pursuing their studies.
  • However, students are still expected to balance their study and work obligations, as the students, who stop studying, or lessen course loads to only study part-time are not eligible to work off-campus.
