Canada has started Parents & Grandparents Program-2023 Lottery on 10 October

With effect from October 10, 2023, Canadian government has commenced the process of issuing invitations for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). In coming two weeks, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) planning to issue invitations to 24,200 potential sponsors who have expressed their interest.

The IRCC aims to receive a maximum of 15,000 fully completed applications. It's crucial to note that these invitations are exclusively extended to the families of sponsors who have previously submitted their interest to sponsor forms.

Parents and Grandparents Program- 2023

Last month only, the IRCC announced the new round of invitations. As the number of forms remaining in the pool of submissions from the year 2020, IRCC will send invitations to apply to randomly chosen potential sponsors from that pool in place of opening a new interest to sponsor form.

Hence, a candidate, who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020, however, did not get Invitation to Apply (ITA) in 2021 or 2022, are encouraged to check the email account they provided in 2020 when they submitted their interest to sponsor form.

PGP Process

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) functions via a randomized selection process. Canadian citizens and permanent residents willing to sponsor their parents and grandparents first submit an Interest to Sponsor form, and their entries are placed into a pool. The IRCC then conducts random draws from this pool to issue Invitations to Apply (ITAs). Once sponsors and their parents or grandparents get an ITA, they have a 60-day window to complete and submit a comprehensive application for sponsorship.

Key requirements

The sponsors have to:

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • live in Canada;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, and;
  • Possess sufficient financial means to support the individuals they intend to sponsor by meeting the minimum income prerequisites for the preceding three years. Applicants also have the option to include a co-signer in their application, enabling the combined income to be taken into consideration.

The sponsors commit to providing financial support for the parent or grandparent for a duration of 20 years starting from the date they get approval for PR. Moreover, they pledge to reimburse the government for any social assistance disbursed to the parent or grandparent over that period.
