In a move that could significantly benefit international students, the Canadian government has increased the off-campus work hour limit to 24 hours per week. This change, which took effect on November 15, 2024, is expected to provide students with greater financial flexibility and practical work experience.
Prior to this adjustment, international students were restricted to a 20-hour weekly off-campus work limit during academic terms. This increase, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Minister Marc Miller, aims to strike a balance between academic pursuits and part-time employment.
"We understand the financial challenges that many international students face," said Minister Miller. "By increasing the off-campus work hour limit, we're providing students with more opportunities to gain valuable work experience and support themselves while studying in Canada."
The increased work hour limit applies to off-campus employment during academic terms. Students remain unrestricted in terms of on-campus work hours and off-campus work during academic breaks.
A New Era for International Students
This change is part of a broader effort to enhance the international student experience in Canada. The government recognizes the significant contributions that international students make to the Canadian economy and society. By providing greater flexibility in terms of work opportunities, Canada aims to attract top talent from around the world.
In addition to the increased work hour limit, the IRCC has introduced a new requirement for international students who wish to change schools. Students will now need to apply for a new study permit before transferring to a different Designated Learning Institution (DLI). This change is intended to strengthen the integrity of the International Student Program and ensure that students are enrolled in legitimate educational institutions.
