Canadian Visitors- Avoid criminal inadmissibility issues at the Canadian border
Now that the Canadian borders have opened for fully vaccinated travellers, visitors from different parts of the world will be keen to visit their friends and family and enjoy the beautiful Canadian outdoors.
But before you plan a trip to Canada, you need to note you might be deemed as inadmissible to Canada if you have any past criminal record. Canada may turn you away based on the severity of a criminal offence.
Thus, it is essential to plan for your trip to Canada ahead of time. There are three key remedies to your rescue.
Here are the three ways offered by Canada to overcome criminal inadmissibility:
Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)
You can apply for a TRP if you are inadmissible and wish to visit Canada temporarily. You must show a compelling reason for the visit and show that the benefits of your Canadian trip outweigh the associated risks. Once your application is approved, you will get a TRIP valid for three years.
Rehabilitation
It is a permanent solution, which means once you are considered to be rehabilitated in Canada, you can visit as you wish without worrying about being deemed inadmissible.
Canada has two forms of rehabilitation, including Deemed rehabilitation and individual.
Legal Opinion Letter
It is a third option to help you overcome criminal inadmissibility. Lawyers prepare these letters to mention arguments about why a person can enter Canada despite their criminal record. For example, the letter can challenge a charge or conviction or acknowledge the sentence. Legal Opinion Letters can also be used for supporting a Rehabilitation or TRP application.
