Canada is now offering an open work permit to Start-up Visa holders, providing them the freedom to work and live in Canada while you build your business from the scratch.

  • The IRCC will change the temporary work permit alternative for SUV applicants and will allow them to apply for an open work permit of up to 3 years, rather than a 1-year work permit that confines them to work only for their own start-up.
  • With OWP, you can now work anywhere in Canada, not just within your own start-up.
  • The new Open Work permit will be available to each member of the entrepreneurial team.
  • Presently, only members of the entrepreneurial team who are recognized as essential and urgently needed in Canada can only apply for the same.

New Measures for Canada Start-up Visa (SUV) Program

Find below key measures announced by the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Canada Start-up Visa (SUV) program:

  • The Start-up Visa Program provides a pathway to PR for overseas entrepreneurs who have obtained the support of a designated Canadian venture capital fund, angel investor organization or business incubator for their start-up.
  • In order to address the long wait times for applicants, more spots have been allocated to SUV under the 2023–2025 multi-year levels plan.
  • As a result, the targets have tripled the number of permanent residents estimated in the Federal Business category for this year compared to 2022. Further upsurges are intended in 2024 and 2025. Processing and accepting more applications will help lessen the application inventory.
  • Spotting the long wait times for applicants due to high interest in the start-up visa program, IRCC will change the temporary work permit option for SUV applicants and will allow them to apply for an open work permit of up to 3 years, instead of one-year work permit that bounds them to work exclusively for their own start-up.
  • This will make it stress-free and more appealing for founders to come to Canada and develop their business while they wait for their PR application to be processed.
  • The work permit will be available to each member of the entrepreneurial team. Presently, only members of the entrepreneurial team who are recognized as essential and urgently required in Canada by the designated organization supporting the start-up can apply.
  • The IRCC will prioritize applications to make certain those supported by committed capital or endorsed by a business incubator that is also a member of Canada’s Tech Network will move to the front of the line for processing.
  • The prioritising the plan will be applied to both PR applications presently in the backlog and to newly submitted applications.
  • The IRCC may announce additional strategies for addressing processing times and improving program effectiveness later this year.
