Canada Revises Citizenship Fees for Adult Applicants

At midnight on March 31, 2025, Canada implemented an increase to the right of citizenship fee for adult permanent residents seeking Canadian citizenship. The new fee is set at $119.75 for those who applied or will apply on or after this date.

Who is Affected by the New Fees?

The revised fee structure directly impacts permanent residents aged 18 and older. These individuals will now pay a total of $649.75, which includes the $530 processing fee and the increased $119.75 right of citizenship fee. Previously, the total cost for this demographic was $630. Stateless adults born to Canadian parents are also subject to this increased right of citizenship fee. Importantly, those who submitted complete online applications before the deadline and paid the old $100 fee are exempt. However, individuals who submitted paper applications before March 31 might need to pay the difference.

No Change for Minor Applicants

The processing fee for minor applicants (under 18 years of age) remains unchanged at $100. They are not required to pay the right of citizenship fee.

Requirements for Canadian Citizenship through Naturalization

To become a Canadian citizen through naturalization, applicants must meet several criteria, including:

  • Holding permanent resident status,
  • residing in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the past five years,
  • filing taxes if required,
  • passing a citizenship test (for those aged 18-54), and
  • demonstrating English or French language proficiency (CLB 4)

Minors are exempt from the physical presence requirement. Successful applicants participate in a citizenship ceremony and take the oath of citizenship (if 14 or older). Currently, the processing time for Canadian citizenship applications is approximately eight months.

Embrace the Opportunity: Consider Canada in 2025

Despite the minor adjustment in adult citizenship fees, Canada continues to be a welcoming nation for individuals seeking new opportunities and a high quality of life. The country's commitment to multiculturalism, strong social programs, and diverse economic prospects makes it an attractive destination for immigrants worldwide.

For those aspiring to build a future in a stable and inclusive society, 2025 presents a promising window to embark on their immigration journey to Canada. The clear pathways to permanent residency and eventual citizenship, even with this slight fee modification for adults, underscore Canada's ongoing commitment to immigration as a cornerstone of its growth and prosperity.
