Canada- Rural & Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) to be a permanent program by August 2024

As per the recent statement by Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) of Canada is likely to become a permanent immigration program or may continue in some form after August 2024. The RNIP, launched 5 years ago, has been a huge success in terms of hiring skilled immigrants to work in smaller communities with labour shortages and aging populations.

Rural & Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)

Last year, the program accepted 1,360 new permanent residents (PRs), and in January 2023 alone, 510 new PRs were welcomed via this program. If this trend continues throughout this year, more than 6,120 immigrants will arrive through the RNIP by the end of 2023.

Candidates for the pilot must fulfil minimum language proficiency requirements based on employment classifications under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system and hold an accredited ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) report comparable to a Canadian high school diploma. English language ability can be proven as per the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks).

Stepwise process for RNIP

There are four steps involved to apply for permanent residence under this pilot.

  1. Check that you fulfil bellows:
    • IRCC eligibility requirements and
    • the community-specific requirements.
  1. Find an eligible employment with an employer in one of the participating communities.
  2. Once you have an employment offer, submit your application for recommendation to the community.
  3. If a community recommends you, apply for permanent residence (PR).

Each community will also have its own

  • additional eligibility requirements
  • job search process
  • community recommendation application process
