Canada’s Job vacancy rate recorded All-time high in Second quarter of 2022

Statistics Canada has released the second quarter report of Job Vacancy and Wage Survey (JVWS) 2022. As per this report, job vacancy rate of Canada was record high, i.e. 5.7% in second quarter of 2022. The employers in the maple leaf country are actively seeking to fill nearly one million vacant positions across all sectors reveals the latest report.

Canada Job Vacancy and Wage Survey (JVWS) - 2nd Quarter 2022

Vacancies were up 4.7% (+45,000) in second quarter compare to the first quarter, and 42.3% (+296,500) higher compare to the 2nd quarter of last year, i.e. 2021.

Canada job vacancy rate indicates the number of vacant positions as a ratio of total labour demand (i.e. total of filled and vacant positions). The same was 5.7% in the 2nd quarter, i.e. an all-time high.

Job vacancies up in six provinces

Job vacancies increased in six provinces from the 1st quarter to the 2nd quarter:

  • Ontario (+6.6% to 379,700),
  • Nova Scotia (+6.0% to 22,400),
  • British Columbia (+5.6% to 163,600),
  • Manitoba (+5.2% to 29,300),
  • Alberta (+4.4% to 100,900) and
  • Quebec (+2.4% to 248,100)

The vacant positions have increased significantly across several sectors, revealed in latest report. Let’s take a look.

  • Health care and social assistance: Job vacancies in health care and social assistance remained high. Total 136,100 job vacancies recorded in the health care and social assistance sector in the 2nd quarter, little improved from the record high of the last quarter (135,300), however it was up 28.8% (+30,500) on a year-over-year basis (seasonally adjusted).
  • Accommodation and food services: Job vacancies increased in accommodation and food services. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, vacancies in the accommodation and food services sector increased 12.7% (+16,800) to 149,600 in the 2nd quarter, greatly offsetting the drop (-18,800) recorded in the 1st quarter.
  • Professional, scientific and technical services: All time high number of job vacancies in professional, scientific and technical services. The number of vacant jobs in the professional, scientific and technical services sector recorded a high of 74,600 in the 2nd quarter, rose 7.9% from the 1st quarter of this year and 79.1% greater than in the 1st quarter of 2020 (seasonally adjusted).
  • Trade, construction and manufacturing: Job vacancies marginally changed in retail trade, construction and manufacturing.

Now, July 2022 data for the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours and the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey will be released on September 29, 2022. The 3rd quarter of this year (July to September) JVWS results, which will provide insights into job vacancies by subsector, vacancies by occupation and offered wages, will be revealed on December 19, 2022.
