Canada to accept 15,000 complete applications for Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

As per the latest update, the Canadian immigration department, i.e. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept up to 15,000 complete applications for Parent and Grandparents Program (PGP) this year. The PGP of Canada is a crucial immigration pathway. This program is a testament to Canada's commitment to family values and diverse immigration policies, as it allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency.

The PGP promotes family reunification, allowing generations to stay close. To be eligible, sponsors need to fulfil financial criteria and commit to supporting their loved ones.

2023 Intake- A total of 15,000 PGP Applications to be accepted

Between October 10 and 23, 2023, the IRCC will send 24,200 invitations to apply to potential sponsors, with a target to receive up to the 15,000 complete applications. You can sponsor your parents and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada if,

  • you submitted the interest to sponsor form in 2020
  • you are invited to apply for the 2023 intake

If you receive ITA (Invitation to Apply)

If you are invited to apply, you need to submit two applications:

  • the sponsorship application
  • the permanent residence application

If the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) approve both applications, you will have to sign an agreement called an undertaking that starts on the day the person you are sponsoring (and their family members, if this applies) becomes a permanent resident of Canada.

As per the immigration level plan of Canada 2023-2025, the IRCC will welcome 28,500 new permanent residents through Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in the year 2023.

Eligibility requirement for the sponsors

You can sponsor your own biological or adopted parents & grandparents if you are invited to apply

  • you must be at least 18 years old
  • you live in Canada
  • you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • you have sufficient funds to support the people you want to sponsor
    • to show that you have enough, you will have to provide your proof of income
    • you may have a spouse or common-law partner co-sign the application to combine your incomes
  • you and your parents and grandparents meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations
