Canada to Improve Newcomer Experience with Digital Platform Modernization (DPM)

The Government of Canada is committed to provide a welcoming and user-friendly experience via its Digital Platform Modernization (DPM). This state-of-the-art functioning platform will revolutionize immigration services by introducing an online single window, enhancing automation, and ensuring a more human-centric approach. The goal is to speed up processing, improve program integrity, and simplify the immigration journey for individuals and families.

Find below the actions being taken by the government to achieve its above-mentioned objectives:

  • Reduce wait times: Efforts are in progress to reduce wait times and improve service standards by boosting operational capacity, embracing digital tools, and aligning application intake with available spaces. Moreover, the expansion of the partial visa-exempt countries list and prioritizing visa processing for major events aim to facilitate tourism and international conferences.
  • Eliminating Future Barriers: A critical analysis of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) is underway to evaluate the need for legislative amendments or reform, ensuring it aligns with the evolving goals of the immigration system. Addressing financial barriers for foreign students, especially those from francophone communities in sub-Saharan Africa, is a priority, with a pilot program in development.
  • Strengthening Partnerships: Partnerships with employers and institutions relying on immigration will be fortified through initiatives like Letter of Acceptance (LOA) Verification, Recognized Institutions Framework, and the Recognized Employer Pilot. These steps aim to streamline processes, enhance protections for foreign nationals, and address labour shortages.

  • Improving communication: Efforts include establishing an advisory council of newcomers to guide policy development, enhancing the accessibility of information on the IRCC website, and exploring solutions to potential barriers faced by families navigating the immigration system. Streamlining pathways, simplifying programs, and exploring new opportunities to support employers are also part of the plan.
  • User-Friendly Applications: The development of a modern, digital, and data-driven Client Experience Platform will revolutionize the online portal for candidates, providing a more positive and personalized experience. Measures to make obtaining or renewing passports easier for Canadians and newcomers are also in progress.
  • Advancing Reconciliation: In alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan, the government aims to address migration challenges faced by Native Peoples divided by international borders. A new Citizenship guide reflecting the history of systemic racism and discrimination faced by Native Peoples is also set to be launched, responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 93.

Canada's commitment to a welcoming, proficient, and equitable immigration system is evident in these inclusive actions, reflecting a dedication to global talent attraction and a respectful approach to the diverse individuals and families choosing Canada as their new home.
