Employment Increased in six Canadian provinces – LFS Report October 2022

As per latest Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey (LFS), October 2022, employment has increased in the six provinces of Canada. Overall, the employment improved by 108,000 (+0.6%) in October, recovering losses witnessed from May to September.

Moreover, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.2% in October. Find out more about the recent observations from LFS.

Employment rose in 6 provinces

Overall, employment increased in several industries, led by manufacturing, construction, and accommodation and food services. Employment improved in six Canadian provinces i.e. Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador in October. There was slight monthly variation in rest of the provinces.

  • Ontario: After a drop in September month, employment in Ontario rose by 43,000 (+0.6%) in October, mainly in part-time work. The unemployment rate in the province was slightly changed at 5.9%. Employment increases were led by accommodation and foodservices and professional, scientific and technical services. 
  • Saskatchewan: Employment in Saskatchewan increased by 6,100 (+1.1%) in October, after six successive months of tiny change. The unemployment rate improved by 0.5 percentage points to 4.6% in October. 
  • Manitoba: Employment in Manitoba rose (+4,600; +0.7%) for a second successive month in October, with additions in full-time employment. Manitoba's unemployment rate and labour force participation rate persisted on par with September. 
  • Quebec: In province of Quebec, employment raised by 28,000 (+0.6%) in October, the second surge in 3 months. The unemployment rate of the province dropped 0.3 percentage points to 4.1%. Improvements in full-time work more than offset a drop in part-time work. The biggest employment increases were in construction; and finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing. 
  • Prince Edward Island: In PEI, one of the provinces affected by post-tropical storm Fiona in September, employment improved by 4,300 (+5.3%) in October, more than offsetting a September drop. The unemployment rate dropped 2.9 percentage points to 5.4%.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: Employment also increased in Newfoundland and Labrador (+3,300; +1.4%) in October. Irrespective of the fact that more people working, the unemployment rate rose 0.8 percentage points to 10.3%, as more people in the NL participated in the labour market.

Record high Employment rate among immigrants

As per the Labour Force Survey (LFS) for October, the extent to which immigrants, i.e. the individuals who are or have ever been a landed immigrant or PRs—have succeeded in finding work and filling a comprehensive range of job vacancies across Canada.

  • Immigrants aged 15 and older (62.2%) were at highest level in terms of employment rate for the month of October since comparable data became available in the Labour Force Survey in 2006.
  • The employment rate (70.7%) was 5.6 percentage points for those who admitted to Canada within the last 5 years, i.e. higher than before the pandemic.
