Express Entry category-based Selections- Categories with most job vacancies

Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser on 31 May 2023 announced the category-based selections for the federal Express Entry System. Which means apart from regular and program-specific draws, the Express Entry will also hold the category-based draws.

In such draws, the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will select candidates with high proficiency in French language and work experience in any of the below occupation categories.

  • Healthcare
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food

How category based selection will occur?

If your profile matches to any of the above categories, it is wise to explore and understand how the job market of your category looks like and where jobs are the most available. Find below the data of available jobs as per Statistics Canada data job vacancies survey (2022 Q4) classified by province and territory.

Healthcare

After the global pandemic there is great demand for healthcare workers and hence the job vacancies in the Healthcare and Social Assistance category have increased significantly.

In the 4th quarter of 2022, there were total 143,695 job vacancies available under the Healthcare and Social Assistance category (i.e. job vacancy rate 6%). The job vacancies available across Canadian province were-

  • Ontario-             55,250
  • Manitoba-          6,790
  • Newfoundland-   2,250
  • Quebec-             40, 105
  • British Columbia- 17,705
  • Alberta-  9,770
  • Saskatchewan-   2,955
  • Nova Scotia-      4,780

STEM professions

The availability of jobs under Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) comes under the Professional, Scientific, and technical services category. This sector registered 56,915 job vacancies in Q4 of 2022 (i.e. job vacancy rate 4.6%). The job vacancies available across Canadian province were-

  • Newfoundland-    405

Trades

The trades category comprise wholesale trades and retail trades in Statistics Canada data. The total number of available wholesale trades job vacancies were 30,930, while the total retail trades job vacancies were 108,795. The job vacancies available across Canadian province were-

Transport

There were 43,700 job vacancies in the transportation and warehousing category (i.e. job vacancy rate 5%). The JVR for this category is reducing since start of 2021. The job vacancies available across Canadian province were-

Agriculture and agri-food

The Job Vacancy rate of Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting was at 10,535 (i.e. the JVR of 3.9%). The JVR in this area has been reducing too since 2021, while it was right at top, i.e. 7.2% in the 2nd quarter of 2022. The job vacancies available across Canadian province were-

  • Ontario-              3,070
  • Saskatchewan-    540
  • Manitoba-           550
  • New Brunswick-  720
  • Nova Scotia-       425
  • PEI-                    130
  • Quebec-              1,950
  • British Columbia- 2,475

Although the precise date of the category-based express entry draws is not confirmed yet, however, one can expect it to take place within next few months. It is the right time to apply for Canada PR if your occupation falls under any of the above mentioned categories.
