Express Entry Immigrants Thriving in Canadian Economy

Immigrants arriving in Canada through the Express Entry program are experiencing a rapid increase in their median employment income within the first five years of their residency. This positive trend is highlighted in the 2023 Year-End Express Entry report, which analysed the economic outcomes of Express Entry candidates admitted between 2016 and 2021.

Consistent Income Growth

Since its inception in 2015, Express Entry has consistently delivered favourable long-term economic results for newcomers. For instance, those admitted in 2016 saw their median employment earnings rise from $58,400 in 2017 to $76,800 in 2021 (five years after landing). Similarly, newcomers admitted in 2018 experienced a significant wage increase, from $55,200 in their first year to $70,800 three years later.

Outpacing Canadian-Born

In contrast, the median employment income for Canadian-born individuals remained relatively stable throughout the five-year period, starting at $38,006 in 2017 and reaching $40,870 in 2021. This demonstrates that Express Entry newcomers are effectively integrating into the Canadian labor market and contributing to the economy.

Targeted Selection and Labor Market Needs

Express Entry candidates are selected based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which evaluates factors such as language ability, work experience, education, and age. Individuals with the highest CRS scores are considered more likely to successfully integrate into the Canadian economy.

In 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection rounds of invitations, allowing candidates to be selected based on specific attributes, such as work experience. While data on the economic outcomes of these newcomers is not yet available, this targeted approach aims to further align Express Entry with Canada's labor market needs.

PNP Immigrants Lag Behind

Economic immigrants admitted through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) tend to have lower median wages compared to Express Entry candidates. The report found that PNP admission cohorts' median employment earnings ranged between the mid-$40,000 range to the low-$50,000s one year after admission.

Additional Scoring Factors Have Limited Impact

While factors like education and family ties can influence income, the report indicates that they do not necessarily result in higher median incomes unless candidates have the highest possible scores for these attributes. For example, applicants with Canadian post-secondary credentials had slightly higher median earnings, but those with 1-2 years of Canadian education had lower incomes than those with no post-secondary education.

Arranged Employment Drives Higher Incomes

Arranged employment, particularly in senior management roles, was the only additional scoring factor consistently associated with higher median incomes. Newcomers with pre-arranged jobs in senior management positions reported median incomes exceeding $200,000 two years after landing. Even those with arranged employment in other occupations had higher median incomes than those without pre-arranged jobs.
