The government of New Zealand has launched a new Recovery Visa for foreign skilled workers. This Recovery Visa is a new Specific Purpose Work Visa, which allows employers to sponsor suitably skilled workers to come to New Zealand and assist with the reconstruct.
At the start of this year, North Island of NZ got severely affected by cyclone Gabrielle and other disastrous weather events. Now, to get assistance in recovery, the Government is supporting business by letting them rapidly bring overseas experts.
When is the Recovery Visa available?
Interested applicants can apply via the Specific Purpose Work visa scheme.
How long is the Recovery Visa valid for?
The Immigration NZ grand this Specific Purpose Work visa for up to 6 months at a time. The visa holders may not apply for a further Recovery visa once the operation is complete, however they may choose to apply for alternate work visa under a different category, based on obtaining a new job offer.

Can employers apply for this visa?
No, employers need to show how the migrant workers they want to bring in will provide relevant support. Migrant workers will apply for the visa on their own or with the help of a Licensed Immigration Consultant.
Does this visa cover the whole of New Zealand?
Yes, although only the North Island part is affected, the NZ identifies that some businesses in the South Island directly support the recovery, hence Immigration NZ may grant the Recovery visa for roles in both North & South Islands of the country.
How long does Recovery visa take to process?
Immigration New Zealand aims to process this particular visa within 1 week. It is vital to have all relevant documentation to make certain the prompt processing.
How much does the Recovery visa cost?
A fee of NZD$700 is payable while submitting the application for this visa, and will be refunded for successful applications.
What visas are available for indirect support or other roles?
Migrant workers required for indirect support, i.e. backfilling vacancies for evacuated staff, will not be eligible for this visa.
However, such applicants may apply under an alternative visa category, i.e. as the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). New Zealand is considering easing the grant of AEWV visas under certain occupations for quick processing.
