South Australia has received Skilled & Business Migration nomination allocations for 2023-2024

The Australian Government has announced the visa nomination allocations for South Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program for the year 2023-2024. The current allocation stands at 2,300 nomination places, which is relatively low compare to 8,800 places in the previous year (2022-2023). However, the allocating the nominations in parts has also been the part of practice in the past. Hence, the government may allocate additional nomination places later this program year.

Immigration SA’s active planning

Immigration SA is actively planning on how best to support SA’s key industries with these limited positions. Their focus is cantered on appealing skilled migrants from overseas in crucial sectors, i.e. Health and Defence.

Further details concerning the GSM program for 2023-24 will be released shortly, and pending GSM applications from the 2022-23 financial year will be decided in the next few weeks. Parallel to other states and territories, SA will not get any nomination places for the Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) in the upcoming 2023-24 period.

For business or investor migrants who presently hold a provisional visa (subclass 188), there is chance to apply for nomination for the extension stream or the permanent (subclass 888) visa in 2023-24, as these categories are not subject to a quota.

Understanding State Nomination

State nomination allows the state government to select highly skilled migrants to address SA’s skills requirements. For skilled migrants, state nomination can improve eligibility for a skilled migration visa granted by the Department of Home Affairs, Australia. This converts to extra points added to your visa application. Two options for skilled migration visas are available for state nomination:

  • Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa (Subclass 190): This is a permanent visa nominated by the state, allowing skilled migrants the ability to live and work in the state of South Australia. More information on the DHA Subclass 190 visa prerequisites is available.
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491): This state-nominated provisional visa allows the skilled migrants to live and work in SA for up to 5 years and can pave the way to permanent residency.

Benefits of State Nomination

Apart from enjoying the remarkable lifestyle and work prospects, applying for state nomination in SA offers the below advantages:

  • Access to an extensive array of occupations
  • Extra points toward the Department of Home Affairs points test for the 190 and 491 visas
  • Faster visa application processing for the subclass 491 visa

Hence, in view of all above benefits and streamlined process, it’s the good time to apply for the state nominated visa in Australia and subsequently, obtain the PR (Permanent Residence).
